Heart of Wanganui

Dear Wanganui resident

Over the past two years, your council has been working on an ambitious project to revitalise Wanganui’s civic and cultural precinct.

If completed, it will bring new life and new energy to the centre of our city and provide updated amenities that are the best in provincial New Zealand. All are located in the Queens Park area.

We have dubbed this project ‘Heart of Wanganui’ and the revamped amenities would certainly give Wanganui a popular and vibrant centre. The ‘Heart’ project includes –

  • the War Memorial Hall
  • the Davis Library
  • the Sarjeant Art Gallery
  • the Regional Museum
  • the War Memorial forecourt
  • the Veterans’ Steps
  • Majestic Square
  • an underground carpark

If completed, the ‘Heart’ project will not only create a future-proofed cultural centre, but will actively complement UCOL’s Old Town campus development, the new riverfront walkway and our main street, Victoria Avenue. Indeed this will be a project that will have significant recreational, cultural and financial consequences for the next 50 years.

Which is why we need your help.

We want the public of Wanganui to decide the format and timing of the ‘Heart’ project. Or even, whether it should go ahead at all.

That’s why we are running an extensive public education campaign on all the options. Then you will choose which option you think should be the council’s priority. That choice will be made by referendum in mid-2007.

Please take the time to read this initial briefing. And remember: it’s your city, your future, your choice.
